"Leaf - Fish Shape Interplay"
Mission Arts Light and Dark Exhibition April 2012
Light and dark is in the tones - dark to light, and the contrast between the bright gold thread and the dark textural lines and background areas.
The subject is one that Sue continues to be fascinated by - the close relationship between, and duplication of, forms in nature. Here the close resemblance between the shape of fish and leaves.
Oil and Pastel $270
The Light to Dark theme reference is in the strong tonal movement from black ground to white stem. The theme is also the choice of the subject. The Arum and Calla Lily is traditionally symbolic of death and is often used at funerals on coffins. Increasingly though it is used in wedding bouquets - again the dark and light.
"The Cat - The Pool - The Moonlight"
The Light and dark is in the contrast between where the pool and trees are in shadow, and where they are lit by the moonlight. Between the black and the bright gold and blue inks. Between the white paper and the black frame. The cat in the centre panel stares motionless into the pool. The contrast between mystery and beauty - light and dark.
